A steep bowl at the end of two highways
Horseshoe Bay is unlike anywhere else we service. The village sits in a tight, steep bowl at the far western end of West Vancouver, right where the Trans-Canada (Highway 1) meets the Sea-to-Sky (Highway 99). Every route into the village drops sharply toward the water, and those descent grades are the whole winter problem: they ice fast, they stay dangerous, and they carry traffic feeding to and from the ferry terminal. A glazed approach here isn’t a slip-and-fall risk so much as a vehicle-control one.
That flips the usual priorities. Horseshoe Bay is a de-icing and salting account first — we treat the approach grades, village streets and lot ramps as priority surfaces, applying product proactively as temperatures fall through 0°C rather than waiting for ice to form on a hill. Snow clearing and plowing handle the accumulation when it comes, but on these grades, prevention is the job.
Cleared before the first sailings
Horseshoe Bay runs on the ferry schedule, and the ferry schedule doesn’t wait for weather. Retail, restaurants and marina-area businesses in the village need safe access before the early sailings pull traffic through, which means our crews treat contracted properties early in the rotation. Being the western end of the route doesn’t make it an afterthought — it makes it the anchor we start from. Every visit is documented with timestamped photos for the property managers and strata councils behind the frontage.
Exposed coast, corrosion-aware product
The Highway 1/99 junction is open and wind-driven, so conditions can turn quickly and the salt air is already hard on paving and marina infrastructure. We match de-icing product to the surface — favouring targeted, corrosion-aware application over blanket rock salt — the same care the Ambleside and Dundarave waterfront strips get further east.
The District of West Vancouver requires owners to clear adjacent sidewalks by 10am after a snowfall, and that frontage is mapped into your plan by default. Dispatch is weather-triggered, so crews are moving on the forecast rather than waiting for a call from a village already iced in, and satellite measurement lets us quote most Horseshoe Bay sites same-day.
