A village strip that runs on appointments
Dundarave is a compact, walkable village on Marine Drive just west of Ambleside, and while the two share the mild waterfront climate, Dundarave’s winter has its own character. Sitting a touch higher and further west, it catches marginally more weather — but the defining feature isn’t snow volume, it’s the tenant mix. This is a professional and medical service district, thick with clinics, dental and specialist offices, and the boutiques and restaurants that anchor the village. Those businesses run on schedules and foot traffic, which changes what good snow service looks like.
Like the rest of the West Vancouver waterfront, the real hazard is ice rather than depth. Ocean freeze-thaw glazes the village frontage overnight, so a Dundarave program leans on proactive de-icing and monitoring, with snow clearing held ready for the occasional real snowfall. Salt goes down as temperatures fall through 0°C, before the glaze sets.
Entrances and walkways first
For a medical and professional district, the entrance and the walkway are the whole ballgame. Clinics see patients on appointment schedules, many with limited mobility, and an iced-over threshold isn’t just a slip-and-fall exposure — it can stop someone from getting to care. We prioritise entrances, walkways and accessible parking on the early-morning rotation so the doors are safe before the first appointment, and we document every visit with timestamped photos for the property managers and strata councils behind the frontage.
Because much of the village runs decorative and higher-end paving, we favour targeted, surface-appropriate de-icing over blanket rock salt — protecting the finish and cutting corrosion in the salt-laden coastal air.
Compliant, on the same pass
The District of West Vancouver requires owners and occupiers to clear the sidewalks bordering their property by 10am after a snowfall.
